We just got back from a five-day vacation in Pollock Pines where we spent our days swimming and hiking at Jenkinson Lake. It was just what our family of five needed. We had originally planned to stay at a condo in Lake Tahoe with my parents, but just just 3 days before we were supposed to leave, we found out that the condo had a leak, causing extensive water damage, and that our vacation would have to be canceled. This news was hugely disappointing for me as I knew that if we did not get away that week, we would have to wait a whole year before getting away. That night, I closed myself up in the bathroom (the only room in the house where I can get a little peace and quiet) and gently reminded God that I was really looking forward to getting away and that I was fairly certain that I would lose my sanity if I did not get a change of scenery soon. I asked Him to provide another place for us that would be free-of-charge (just as the Tahoe condo was going to be) and left it at that. The next day, my mom called to tell us that some friends of hers had heard about our situation and were offering their home in Pollock Pines to us. Thank you God for providing this much needed respite!
Some highlights of our time away:
Getting to be with Steve all day, every day
No TV
Lounging around reading Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone (loving it so far)
Special Mommy and Jonah time, hiking on the Miwok (aka "Ewok") Trail
Making funny faces with Nicolas and both of us cracking up afterwards
Plenty of snuggle time with Riley
Eating meals outside on the deck
Staying up until midnight one night talking to my mom and Kurt and catching up on life
Watching the boys throw rocks, collect sticks, smother themselves with dirt, splash in the lake, and race cars down the super-steep driveway
Sneaking into the little boys room at night (they shared a bed) to watch Nicolas and Riley sleeping right next to one another with their heads touching (precious)
Waking up before everyone else on 2 of the mornings and having time to think, reflect, read my Bible, pray, and take walks
Teaching Jonah how to play Yatzhee and Checkers and watching Steve teach him Chess - so fun!
It's amazing what a little time away can do. Everything just seems a little sweeter when you're on vacation. Don't you think?
